Our Treatment Philosophy
Our treatment philosophy is quite different. We are more interested in learning “what matters to you” than “what’s the matter with you.” We spend time getting to know your goals, hopes, fears, limitations, and obstacles. We measure the quality of your life every visit and track it over time. Your treatment provider will conduct a complete history and evaluation during the first few sessions. Occasionally, other family members or a spouse may be interviewed to obtain additional information while maintaining the patient’s confidentiality.
Once we fully comprehend the nature of the problem, we can formulate treatment options. All treatment decisions are made only after providing sufficient educational material and discussing options. We will also discuss the risks and benefits of all treatment options.
When a diagnostic label is attached to a person, the label’s stigma is carried and may contaminate the healing process. We therefore spend time on solutions and improving the quality of your life. Medication will be used whenever pertinent, and other appropriate therapeutic modalities may be utilized as warranted. These modalities may include a formal sleep study, behavioral therapies, art/music therapy, or traditional psychotherapy.
A significant portion of the therapeutic work occurs outside the office. “Homework exercises” are often assigned at the end of the session to enhance efficacy and efficiency of the treatment.
